Google Maps Ranking Factors Explained — Where Reviews Fit In

Google Maps rank is not a single number. It varies by search query, by the location of the person searching, and by the time of day. But the underlying signals that drive rank are consistent — and they're documented by Google in their help documentation.

This guide breaks down the three official signals Google uses, what each means in practice, and where reviews fit into the picture.

The Three Official Signals

Google's local search documentation identifies three factors that determine local search rank: relevance, distance, and prominence. These are the inputs. Understanding what feeds each one tells you what to optimise.

Relevance

Relevance measures how well your business profile matches the searcher's intent. A profile that lists "hair salon" as its category with minimal additional detail is less relevant to a search for "balayage near me" than a profile with specific services listed, descriptions mentioning the technique, and photos showing the service.

GBP completeness is the primary lever for relevance. Every field that Google provides — categories, services, business description, attributes, photos — is an opportunity to signal what your business does and for whom. Incomplete profiles rank lower because they give Google less to match against search queries.

Distance

Distance is the searcher's proximity to your business. For searches without a location modifier ("near me" or a specific neighbourhood), Google uses the searcher's device location. For searches with a location modifier, it uses the specified location.

Distance is not controllable in the same way as relevance or prominence. What matters is understanding that proximity alone is not sufficient — a business 200 metres from the searcher with poor prominence will rank below a business 800 metres away with strong prominence and relevance.

Prominence

Prominence measures how well-known and credible your business is in Google's assessment. This is where reviews, citations, and your overall online footprint matter most.

The key components of prominence:

  • Review count and rating — more reviews, higher rating, recent review activity all increase prominence
  • Review velocity — consistent weekly reviews signal an active, credible business
  • Citations — mentions of your business name, address, and phone number across authoritative directories
  • Website authority — the quality and relevance of the website linked to your GBP
  • GBP post activity — regular posts signal an active profile

How Review Count Affects Prominence

More reviews directly increase your prominence score. Google's algorithm treats review volume as a credibility signal — a business with 200 reviews is demonstrably more active and more frequently visited than one with 5. In competitive categories in Singapore, review count is often the deciding factor between ranking in the top 3 versus position 5–7.

GBP Completeness as a Relevance Factor

A 19-point GBP audit covers every field that contributes to your relevance signal. Missing business hours mean Google can't confirm you're open when someone searches at 8pm. Missing service categories mean you don't appear for searches that should match your offering. Missing photos reduce click-through rate from Maps results, which is itself a ranking signal.

GBP posts — updates, offers, events — contribute to prominence. Google views active posting as a signal of a live, engaged business. Posting weekly or fortnightly keeps your profile active in Google's assessment. Posts also appear in your Maps listing and can drive clicks.

In Singapore, Google Maps rank changes dramatically every 500 metres. A business ranked #1 for "restaurant" in the Tampines MRT area may rank #4 just 800 metres away near Tampines Mall.
