Google Review Policy Explained — What Qualifies for Removal

Google reviews are permanent by default. Once a customer — or someone posing as a customer — posts a review on your Google Business Profile, it stays there unless it violates one of Google's specific content policies.

Understanding those policies is the difference between a successful removal request and a rejected one. This guide breaks down every prohibited content category and what qualifies for removal in practice.

Why Google's Review Policy Matters

Google does not remove reviews simply because a business owner disputes them. The company's position is that authentic reviews — even negative ones — are valuable to consumers making decisions. Removal is only available for content that violates their published policies.

This means the path to removal runs through policy, not preference. You need to identify which specific rule the review breaks, and frame your removal request accordingly.

Prohibited Content Categories

Spam and Fake Content

Reviews that are not based on a genuine customer experience. This includes reviews from accounts that appear to exist solely to post negative content, reviews that are clearly copied from other sources, and reviews where the same text appears across multiple businesses.

Off-Topic Reviews

Reviews that discuss topics unrelated to the business being reviewed. An ex-employee writing about their working conditions rather than customer service qualifies here — as does a review that complains about a neighbouring business or a general social issue.

Restricted Content

Content that promotes or depicts things restricted by law in the reviewer's jurisdiction. This is rare in a standard business context but applies to certain regulated industries.

Illegal Content

Reviews that include content that is illegal to publish — defamatory statements that go beyond opinion, for example, or content that infringes intellectual property.

Personal Attacks

Reviews that target specific named individuals (staff members, the business owner) with personal insults rather than describing a service experience. This is distinct from criticising service quality.

Conflicts of Interest

This is the category that protects most businesses. A review is a conflict of interest if it comes from someone with a financial stake in the outcome — a direct competitor, a business owner reviewing their own premises under a fake account, or a reviewer who has received or expects to receive payment for their review. Ex-employees with a clear agenda also qualify.

Misrepresentation

Reviews that impersonate another person, that claim to be from a professional capacity the reviewer doesn't have, or that misrepresent the reviewer's actual experience.

The Category That Protects Most Businesses

Conflicts of interest is the most actionable category for Singapore SMBs. If you can demonstrate that a reviewer has a financial connection to a competing business — even through publicly available information like their review history across your competitors — this is a strong basis for removal.

Look at the reviewer's profile. If they have reviewed multiple businesses in your category, and their reviews of your competitors are consistently positive while yours is the only negative, this pattern supports a conflict of interest claim.

False Factual Claims

A review that states specific, demonstrably false facts can qualify for removal. "They charged me $300 for a haircut" when your price list shows $45 is a false factual claim. "The food gave me food poisoning" with no supporting context is harder to categorise as false versus as a genuine — if unverifiable — personal experience.

The key word is factual. Opinions ("the service was terrible") are not removable even if unfair. Facts ("they don't accept cash") that are wrong can be challenged.

What Does NOT Qualify

This is equally important to understand. Negative opinions from genuine customers are not removable under any circumstance. A 1-star review that says "waited 45 minutes and the food was cold" from someone who was actually there is authentic feedback, even if you dispute the account. You can respond to it. You cannot have it removed.

How to Submit a Policy Violation Claim

There are two paths: the flag button (via Google Maps or Business Profile Manager), and the formal business support channel. The flag button is automated — it uses machine learning to assess the claim and rejects the majority of submissions. The formal channel involves human review and allows you to provide context and evidence.

For any review worth removing, go to the formal channel. Cite the specific policy, provide evidence, and be factual. Emotional language reduces your chances. "This reviewer is a competitor" with a screenshot of their review history is more effective than "this review is clearly fake."

Success Rates by Violation Type

Spam and fake content with clear evidence (bot-like account, copied text, suspicious timing) has a relatively high removal rate. Conflicts of interest with documented evidence also perform well. "Unfair opinion" submissions — where the business simply disagrees with the customer's account — are rejected almost universally.

The difference between a successful and unsuccessful submission is usually the quality of evidence and the precision of the policy citation, not the underlying merits of the case.
